New Name, Community Commitment, Equals New Role for Brownwood

March 7, 2025

The Brownwood City Council recently voted unanimously to change the name of Brownwood Municipal Airport to Brownwood Regional Airport. The new name will more adequately reflect the intent and scope of the airport’s function.

The community involvement in support of development and improvements to the Brownwood Regional Airport is clearly evident. The combined efforts of the Brownwood and Early Economic Development Corporations as well as the City of Brownwood will have a significant impact on the look and services of the airport over the next several years.

The TxDOT Brownwood District is providing $60,000 for a landscape project. The District has contracted with Tommy L. Johnson Construction Company to give the entrance to the Brownwood Regional Airport a facelift. Pine, juniper and Bradford pear trees, and other drought-resistant, hearty trees and shrubs will be planted and native limestone planters will be filled with seasonal- colored bedding plants, said Stephen May, district landscape architect assistant.

Brownwood is no longer the end of the line for Lone Star Airline flights coming from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. A growing number of passengers who land at the Brownwood airport are traveling either to or from the Big Bend area. It is not uncommon for the majority of seats occupied on a Lone Star flight to be taken by people making the longer trip.

With more businesses and industries looking south of the border with NAFTA trade agreements coming into play, this area of the state finds itself in a strategic location. Brownwood figures to become an increasingly important point between Mexico and the Metroplex, and that position will be underscored by highway transportation, rail lines and air service.
