Young Eagles

March 28, 2025

Originally published in 1995

In 1992, the “Young Eagles” program was launched nationwide by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Its ambitious goal is to combat a declining interest in general aviation by providing introductory flights to one million young people by 2003, the 10th anniversary of flight. These flights are provided by local EAA members to a generation of people who might not otherwise have such an opportunity. In addition to exposing them to the joy of flying and possible careers in the aviation industry, the program seeks to generate goodwill about airports and aviation among parents, educators, and community leaders. To date over 117,000 Young Eagles have been flown by 10,000 pilots nationwide. According to Bill Gunn, Manager of Aviation Education Programs for the Aviation Division, Texas volunteer pilots have logged approximately 11,700 rides since 1992. For additional information, contact the TxDOT Aviation Division 512/416-4515 or EAA Young Eagles Executive Director, Steve Buss at 414/ 426-4831.
